I painted this picture en plein air on the coast, drawn by the calm, almost weightless atmosphere of the place. I returned to these rocks again and again, painting them in different moods and light. Each time they looked different — sometimes calm, sometimes more dramatic, sometimes almost dissolving into the air. In this work they appear soft and still, as if the landscape itself were at rest. I was interested not in capturing the details but the feeling — that moment when everything slows down and the boundary between water, air and land becomes almost invisible. Added to this is the wonderful atmosphere of painting outdoors together with the other girls.
